Sexual problems are very common. They can be a decrease in desire and excitement, difficulty reaching orgasm, or vulvar or vaginal pain (see section on vulvodynia). Female sexuality is strongly influenced by life’s circumstances, stress, the couple’s relationship and by one’s self-esteem regarding their body. Biological causal factors are less frequent but must be evaluated and eliminated. It is important to take the time to assess the situation to determine the cause of the sexual dysfunction and to guide its treatment. If you are experiencing distress related to your sexuality, take the time to discuss it with your health care professional, as sexuality is part of one’s overall well-being.
